Built by soldiers and opened in 1974, the Transfagarasan Highway is the ‘best road in the world’ according to Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear in 2009; it is easy to see why he made this judgement though. It weaves its way for 90km through the Southern Carpathians mountain range, connecting Transylvania and Wallachia.

Due to the weather conditions, this public road is usually only open between late June and late October. This means that you should experience the best of the Romanian weather when you visit it; the area looks even more picturesque in the sunshine.

HOT tours to the Transfagarasan Highway aim to include driving the road, as well as visiting local attractions such as the castle of Vlad the Impaler. For further details on this trip, visit our Events page.
