SPA – Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps – Belgium
The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is set in the Belgian Ardennes countryside and is home to the Belgian Grand Prix, Spa 24 hours and 1000km Spa endurance races.
The original track was mapped out using public roads which presented many obstacles for early drivers including bails of hay and whole barns! The track became famous as the fastest racing circuit and this, coupled with the added off-track suburban obstacles, contributed to the relatively high number of racing driver deaths on this circuit. It is for this reason that the Grand Prix was taken away from this circuit, and then it was changed to the modern track that is used today.
The track at Spa still offers drivers a high speed experience, but with much improved safety. The Grand Prix returned to this circuit in 1983.
The Belgian Ardennes countryside is beautiful, picturesque and welcoming. The town of Spa, as well as being associated with motorsport, is famous for the spa that it is names after. The Thermes de Spa is a must-visit if you want to wind down and relax after a hard day at the track.
